About Integrated Sleep Medicine Society Japan (ISMSJ)
Integrated Sleep Medicine Society Japan (ISMSJ) was established in 2008 in Japan aiming at integration of various medical fields and occupations related sleep. The mission of ISMSJ includes cultivating human resources that are truly able to practice sleep medicine with multidisciplinary approach and creating world-class sleep medicine originating in Japan. ISMSJ has made consistent effort to develop and establish sleep medicine that is sustainable under the Japanese medical care system. We, composed of approximately 250 members of sleep clinicians, technologists, nurses, and researchers, held annual meetings with distinguished invited overseas guests. On the annual meeting, great value is placed on the quality of discussion and active participation to pursue healthy sleep and good practice in sleep medicine.

Message from the President of ISMSJ
I am honored to have been appointed as President of ISMSJ. I will do my utmost to contribute to the continued growth of our society.
I would like to express my deep respect to Dr. Nana Tachibana, our founding president, and Dr. Ariyuki Hori, our second president, for their outstanding leadership and dedication in establishing the foundation of sleep medicine in Japan. I am committed to carrying forward their vision and further advancing our mission.
In Japan, opportunities for specialized education in sleep medicine remain limited, and the development of a structured curriculum in medical and dental schools is urgently needed. While discussions on formalizing “sleep” as a medical department name are ongoing, it is the substance of care—its quality and expertise—that truly matters.
ISMSJ plays a crucial role in promoting practical education and public awareness. We aim to foster professionals across disciplines—physicians, dentists, nurses, technicians, psychologists, and welfare workers—who can collaborate effectively and provide patient-centered care.
Furthermore, sleep education must extend beyond healthcare settings to schools, communities, and workplaces. Sleep is essential for children’s development, adult productivity, and elderly well-being. ISMSJ will continue to share evidence-based information and promote sleep literacy throughout society.
This society will thrive on the collective efforts of its members. We welcome your ideas and suggestions as we work together to build the infrastructure for sleep medicine and advance team-based care.
